ExtremeTech has an article up on making a bootable movie. This is one of the cooler uses of a Linux LiveCD which I’ve seen. Think of all the effort that went into this project, with the end result being an alternative to a DVD player.

Wolvix Media Edition 1.0.4 Review

Tuxmachines.org put up a positive reivew of the latest Wolvix Media Edition with lots of screenshots. Overall, Wolvix Media Edition looks like a great distro to keep in mind when building a HTPC.

I’ve always been quite the fan of the Wolvix offerings, with each being better than the last. I’ve been testing Media Edition over the last few days and can report Wolven has done a remarkable job.

SLAX 5.0.8 Released

SLAX is announcing that version 5.0.8 is out. Unlike the last release, all the different SLAX versions (frodo, killbill, popcorn) have been updated, and the long awaited SLAX Server Edition has been released too. All include the 2.6.16 kernel.

Tuxmachines.org also has a review up of Wolvix Media Edition. While they say it has some bugs, it looks like a great LiveCD for setting up a quick media center. The desktop appears to be a cleanly configured XFCE.

Mini-itx.com reviews a custom made computer whose purpose is to scan the local network for audio files and play them. The little computer boot from a modified version of Knoppix called Troubadix loaded on a compactflash card.

Troubadix is a specially customized linux (Knoppix-derivative) that differs from other mini-distributions by containing the complete Knoppix kernel 2.6, MySQL 4.1, Apache2, PHP5, OpenSSH and Sun’s JRE 1.4.2 – however no X and thus no window-manager. Since Troubadix is booted from a compact flash card, no moving parts are installed in the housing that could be damaged during transport.
